The Happiest Place On Earth

photographs by Malcolm Jackson

Malcolm Jackson is an award winning artist and photographer from Jacksonville, Florida. In The Happiest Place on Earth, Malcolm visits a place he often frequented as a child, Disney World.

Without the rose colored glasses of childhood, Malcom explores the less glamorous aspects of the park and reveals that magic is ultimately always deceiving, and that not everything is as happy as it’s marketing suggests, even if it is wrapped in Mickey Mouse Ears.

Disney imagineered its parks to give the allure of never having to grow up. Once you enter the looming golden gates, you should feel care-free. Your worries have been wiped away. Every beauty finds everlasting happiness, after all, you're in the happiest place on earth, aren't you?

By creating characters that he could control, and building a fake world of pure glee, Walt Disney was able to turn his wonderful world into a globalized consumerist definition of culture.
